Tour of the Reeuwijk Lakes

From Reeuwijk you cycle towards Gouda and around the Reeuwijkse plassen and discover the beautiful nature reserve in this area.

The route starts at TOP Reeuwijkse Hout. Reeuwijk originated as a medieval peat extraction and was first mentioned in 1248. The area experienced a period of prosperity from the 18th century onwards when the low peat was dredged and dried to be used as peat in the industry of Gouda. This is how the Reeuwijkse plassen were created, which you will also cycle past during this route.

Cozy Gouda
During the cycle route you will pass through the pleasant and atmospheric Gouda. Discover the authentic Gouda with its small medieval streets, the beautiful canals and the many courtyards. A truly unique city, absolutely worth a visit. In the city centre you can still find a large number of historical and monumental buildings. Gouda grew into an important city in the Middle Ages, partly thanks to the inland shipping on the rivers Gouwe and Hollandse IJssel, which Gouda is close to. Gouda is known for its Gouda cheese, but also for its syrup waffles and the manufacture of candles, among other things.

Lakes of Reeuwijk
During this cycling tour you will cycle around the Reeuwijkse Plassen. You will encounter an exuberant bird world in a typical Dutch peat landscape with polders, wooden quays, mills, dikes and farm roads. It doesn't get more Dutch than this! The Reeuwijkse Plassen consist of thirteen lakes between Bodegraven and Gouda and are separated by narrow roads, where part of this cycling tour goes over. Via Woerden and Bodegraven you cycle back to Reeuwijk.
