Jacob van Lennep route, Part 41 (Arnemuiden - Oude Tonge) 2 days

Saturday August 30. Van Lennep is getting shorter and shorter. It's clear: he doesn't feel like it at all anymore. Veere is the last village on Walcheren they visit. A rowing boat takes them to Noord-Beveland. They eat something in Wissenkerke and Kortgene, after which they walk to Colijnsplaat in the pouring rain. After much effort, they arrange a crossing. The skipper wants to cram them into the forecastle, but the travelers are not going to put up with that."So we stayed on deck and during the five quarters of an hour of the crossing it rained even wetter than we already were.\\\" On Schouwen-Duiveland they spend the night in Zierikzee.

Miserable fate
On Sunday morning, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp attend mass in the main church, after which they walk through the city. They compare the beautiful wide canal with the Oude Schans in Amsterdam. The innkeeper tells them when the water level is favorable for the crossing to Goeree-Overflakkee. When we arrived in Bruinisse, the water level turned out to be much too low. Van Lennep feels cheated:"We were forced to spend the night there in the ferry house. We submitted to our miserable fate.\\\"

And that ends Van Lennep's travelogue. Yet the young men were not home yet. The last stage of the journey is based on Dirk van Hogendorp's diary.

You cross the Veerse Meer via Fiets- en Voetveer Veere - Kamperland. You can also take a detour via Vrouwenpolder. Follow junctions 36, 32, 31, 30, 3 and 2 to get to junction 1 on the route.
Due to the lack of stations on this part of the route, an overnight stay in Oude Tonge is necessary. Route.nl advises Hotel Restaurant Lely.
