Walking through Beets and Oudendijk

This walk of almost 15 kilometers takes you through the wide landscape of North Holland.

Historic churches

On the way you walk past two churches. The first one you will come across is Beets Church. This church was built in the first half of the 15th century. The building was partly used as a town hall and a school for a while. In 1873 and 1961 the church was restored. A little later you arrive at Church Oudendijk. This reformed church was built in 1648 as a replacement for a 15th-century church. In the church you will find, among other things, an old pulpit and a baptismal arch from the 17th century.

West Frisian Omringdijk
The wide landscape you walk through is typically Dutch. Oudendijk, a village you will also pass through, is located on the monumental 126-kilometre long West Frisian Omringdijk. You also walk for a while along the Beemster Uitwatering, which was dug after the draining of the Beemster in 1612. Digging this ring ditch literally and figuratively took a lot of effort. Farmers did not agree with the ditch. Finally they gave permission on the condition that they could reach their lands by bridge. There are still seven of these characteristic bridges to be found.
