Old and New Pekela, the valley of the Ruiten Aa and Bourtange: this is a long route, but it does offer the opportunity to turn it into a multi-day trip.
Brine A
The route starts in Oude Pekela, in Groningen. From there, you cycle to Nieuwe Pekela. Both are named after the small river Pekel A, which in turn derives its name from the saltwater. The water flowed into the sea, but seawater also flowed into the river. Oude and Nieuwe Pekela are typical peat settlements, such as you find so many here. In the past, they were one long village along the water – the peat was mainly transported by water.
Bourtange
Then you enter the Ruiten Aa valley, passing through a variety of rolling fields, meadows, copses, and hedgerows. In spring, the stream valley turns yellow with the abundance of marsh marigolds. Historic Bourtange is a beautiful fortified town, perfect for a stop-off further on!
