Old and New Pekela, the Ruiten Aa valley and Bourtange: this is a long route, but it does offer you the opportunity to make it a multi-day trip.
Pekel A
The route starts at Oude Pekela, in Groningen. From here you cycle to Nieuwe Pekela. Both are named after the Pekel A river, which takes its name from the salinized water. The water stream flowed into the sea, but seawater also flowed into the river. Old and New Pekela are typical peat colonies as you often find here. It used to be one elongated village along the water - the peat was mainly transported by water.
Bourtange
Then you drive into the valley of the Ruiten Aa. Here you drive through a variety of round fields, hay fields, bushes and hedgerows. In the spring the stream valley turns yellow due to the many marsh marigolds. Historic Bourtange is a beautiful fortified town that you can stop off further afield!
