A nice round through the green Westerwolde of Groningen. Along the way you will discover nice places to take a break, such as a ceramics museum and the old City Canal.
Ceramics
Westerwolde in Groningen is a beautiful green area where you can take many beautiful bike rides. With this route you drive south parallel to the German border, making a nice loop towards Stadskanaal. Along the way you can make a nice stop at the Goedewaagen Ceramic Museum, with pottery from Art Nouveau and Art Déco.
City Canal
The museum is located right on the provincial border of Drenthe and Groningen, in Nieuw Buinen. From here you cycle through Stadskanaal. It is named after the canal of the same name that was completed in 1856 and was dug almost entirely by Groningen and German workers with shovels. In the nineteenth century it was one of the busiest shipping routes in the Netherlands. Because waiting times at the locks increased to several hours, cafes and shops were established in these places: this is how Stadskanaal was created.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
