Westerwolde: from ceramics museum to Stadskanaal

Ceramics
The Westerwolde region of Groningen is a beautiful green area offering numerous lovely bike rides. This route takes you south, parallel to the German border, creating a scenic loop towards Stadskanaal. Along the way, you can make a stop at the Goedewaagen Ceramic Museum, featuring Art Nouveau and Art Deco pottery.

City Canal
The museum is located right on the provincial border of Drenthe and Groningen, in Nieuw Buinen. From here, you cycle through Stadskanaal. It is named after the canal of the same name, completed in 1856 and almost entirely dug by Groningen and German laborers. In the nineteenth century, it was one of the busiest shipping routes in the Netherlands. Because waiting times at the locks could reach several hours, cafés and shops were established in these locations: thus, Stadskanaal was born.
