Description
There is no shortage of beautiful old churches in De Marne. Also discover the fishing history and the beautiful old wooden houses at the harbor of Zoutkamp!
Peter's Church
The route starts in Leens, a picturesque mound village. You will immediately see some monumental retirement homes and the beautifully situated Peter's Church, whose nave dates from 1100. Then you walk through the polders on narrow roads. You will have no trouble switching back here with those vast skies and the silence around you. You pass some centuries-old farms, it is as if you are going back in time here.
Silver fleet
You cross the Hunsingo Canal and follow the water's edge until near Ulrum. Here you turn to Niekerk. On the mound in Niekerk you walk past a thirteenth-century church, which was restored in the seventeenth century with proceeds from the Zilvervloot. At the harbor of Zoutkamp you will see some old wooden houses a little further on. Drop by the Zoutkamp Fisheries Museum, where you will learn all about the history of this special area! You walk back via Ulrum.
