Enjoy the tranquility of the polder and discover special places such as Niekerk and Zoutkamp. You will find numerous historical buildings here.
Zoutkamp
Your starting point is in Zoutkamp: this town used to be on the Lauwerszee. Zoutkamp has a past as a fishing town and fortified town. It is located exactly at the point where the Reitdiep changes into the Lauwersmeer. At the harbor you will see some old wooden houses. Then you walk further into De Marne, a historic region in the northwest of Groningen.
Niekerk
You walk through old polder land that was partly shaped by the hard work of the people of Groningen in their battle against the sea. The peace and quiet in the polder and the rhythm of your steps are the ideal recipe to completely clear your head. This way you have all the attention you need for special places - such as the mound in Niekerk. Here you walk past a thirteenth-century church, which was restored in the seventeenth century with proceeds from the Silver Fleet!
