A beautiful route along the Lauwersmeer and the surrounding villages with their beautiful churches. There is so much special to discover here!
Lauwersmeer
The route starts in the village of Lauwersoog, where many fishermen are always active. Then you cycle a long way to Lauwersmeer National Park. This lake was once an arm of the Wadden Sea. To minimize the risk of flooding, the inlet was closed. This created a unique wilderness of water, forests, seas of orchids and rugged grasslands. More than a hundred bird species breed in this area.
Churches
There are two monumental locks in Zoutkamp: the Hunsingos lock from 1859 and the Reitdiep locks from 1877. A beautiful sight. Also a striking place is the Tea Factory in Houwerzijl. This tea museum is located in a nineteenth-century former church and adjacent parsonage. You will find many beautiful churches here: in Ulrum there is a beautiful church from the thirteenth century and the church in Hornhuizen has a striking yellow bell tower. There is still so much to discover here!
