During this short walk around Hoogwoud you will discover the rural surroundings of West Friesland.
Hoogwoud
You walk a short distance through Hoogwoud, the village known for the fact that William II of Holland was killed nearby in 1256 in a battle against the West Frisians. He was "buried" behind the hearth of a farm in Hoogwoud. His son, Floris V, made several attempts to find his father and bury him in his own area. This succeeded with a battle in 1282. Hoogwoud was plundered. In 1429 the city regained its city rights, which had previously been revoked.
Country side
Enjoy the peace and quiet and discover the rural surroundings of the West Frisian landscape while you take a leisurely walk towards the hamlet of Gouwe. Here are mainly farms. Most of these have been restored to their former glory, creating an idyllic atmosphere. Then you walk on to Aartswoud, where there is still a Dutch Reformed Church from 1884 with a 16th-century tower.
