Description
This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour inspired by the journey that Van Lennep made through the Netherlands with his fellow student Van Hogendorp in 1823. Click here for an overview of all stages.
Messed up
Thursday August 14th. Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp walk via Soest to Soestdijk, where they enjoy a delicious meal with friends. Then they visit the palace, which was renovated in 1815 by order of William II and his Anna Pavlovna. The couple was partly inspired by the Tsar's Palace in Pavlovsk. Van Lennep is not charmed by it:"We viewed the palace, which seemed well furnished to us, but we thought it had been poorly renovated and therefore ruined.\\\"

The next day they walk through the forest near Baarn and visit the Groeneveld estate. In Eemnes they drink coffee and continue walking through the woods below Laren. Here they are picked up in a carriage by Fr. Van de Poll, a cousin of Jacob van Lennep. They drive to Jagtlust in Bilthoven, a country house inhabited by the Van de Poll family. Van Lennep spends fifteen minutes with his grandmother, after which the gentlemen are taken to Utrecht by carriage.
