Description

The Nemelaer probably started as a hunting lodge with the name Int Haeswyntken.  Later called Nemer or Amer after the stream near the house, laer means open space in the forest. That name appears for the first time in 1303. Through inheritance it came into the hands of other important Brabant noble families and all this time it has apparently been a good hunting ground in that area.
In 1831, Baron Van den Bogaerde, Governor of Brabant from Belgium, became the owner. A grandson renovated the castle in Gothic style in 1880. It was he who gave permission for the construction of a railway line across the estate.
The grave monument he designed was considered offensive: the statues were thrown into the pond. Some remains are still at the castle or possibly in BEELDVEN located on the estate.

According to a will, the castle had to remain uninhabited for 70 years, to which the family had great objections. The heirs successfully challenged his last wish. As a result, the art was auctioned, but the house remained uninhabited. In 1964, the family sold the Nemerlaer to the Brabants Landschap, which gave it a cultural destination.×
