Discover the Brabantse Wal, a striking elevation in the landscape on the border of North Brabant and Zeeland.
Steep edge
Today you will discover why the area is called that: you will clearly see (and feel!) the difference in height. The escarpment forms the sudden transition between the high Brabant sandy soils on the east side and the low-lying sea clay area of the Scheldt in the west. It is so special that it has been declared a geological monument.
Markiezaatsmeer
The Brabantse Wal was formed by all kinds of developments: erosion by the river, dune formation by polar wind and deposits of river clay. The escarpment, the place where you can clearly see the transition, was created by the erosion by the Scheldt. The route takes you down the escarpment and back up again, via Woensdrecht, Ossendrecht and bird paradise the Markiezaatsmeer - one of the largest wetlands in the Netherlands. It is a bit of a climb but worth it. Also a nice trip with the e-bike!
