Description

Discover the Brabantse Wal, a striking elevation of the landscape on the border of North Brabant and Zeeland.

steep edge
Today you will discover why the area is so called: you will clearly see (and feel!). The steep edge forms the sudden transition between the high-lying sandy soils of Brabant on the east side and the low-lying marine clay area of the Scheldt in the west. It is so special that it has been declared a geological monument.

Marquise lake
The Brabantse Wal was formed by all kinds of developments: erosion by the river, dune formation by polar wind and deposits of river clay. The steep edge, the place where you can clearly see the transition, was created by the erosion by the Scheldt. The route leads you down the escarpment and back up again, via Woensdrecht, Ossendrecht and the Markiezaatsmeer bird paradise - one of the largest wetlands in the Netherlands. It's a bit of a walk up but well worth it. Also a nice trip with the e-bike!
