Variety is key: Merode forests and Demer valley

Cycle through a rural area, past the ancient forests of Merode to the Demer Valley and back into the forest. A wonderfully varied route!

Merode
The route begins with a cup of coffee at Domein De Schuur, a campsite in the Antwerp Kempen region. The cozy tavern is located right on the cycling junction network, and the terrace offers a beautiful view of the animal park. You'll then take a lovely rural loop around Herenthout to Domein De Merode. This ancient forest is predominantly coniferous. In some areas, deciduous trees such as oak, beech, and birch predominate.

Demer Valley
The Demer Valley is so different. Like a blue-green ribbon, this valley winds through the Kempen landscape. You'll find marshes, swamp forests, reed beds, and damp meadows. The stream gradually leads you back towards the forests: cycling along the edge of the Assenbossen and the woodland below Noorderwijk, you'll reach the starting point. What a varied route! Back where you started, waffles, pancakes, or one of the other freshly prepared dishes will surely go down well!
