Variety trumps: Merode forests and Demer valley

You cycle through a rural area past the ancient forests of the Merode to the Demer valley and back into the forest. A wonderfully varied route!

Merode
The route starts with a cup of coffee at Domein De Schuur, a campsite in the Antwerp Kempen. The cozy tavern is located right on the cycling network and the terrace has a beautiful view over the animal park. You make a beautiful rural winding around Herenthout, to the Domein De Merode. In this old forest you mainly see conifers. In some parts deciduous trees such as oak, beech and birch predominate.

Demer Valley
How different is the Demer Valley. This valley winds through the Kempen landscape like a blue-green ribbon. You will find marshes, swamp forests, reed beds and moist meadows. The stream slowly leads you back to the woods: along the edge of the Assenbossen and the woods below Noorderwijk you cycle to the starting point. What a varied route! Back to square one, waffles, pancakes or one of the other freshly prepared dishes will probably go in...!
