Axelse Creek
Then you drive through the Axelse Kreek nature reserve. It is one of the largest creeks in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The creek is a remnant of a channel that ran from the Western Scheldt through Hulst and back to the Western Scheldt. This open connection was closed with the diking of the Bewesten Blijpolder in 1790. The Axelse Kreek borders the Smitsschorre forest.

Cycling in the sparsely populated Zeeland-Flemish polder is wonderfully peaceful. Here you have sweeping views of meadows and creeks, and from afar you can see the church towers of a village appearing on the horizon. You will drive through Belgium, where you will cycle along stately avenues in the Stropersbos. In the old center of Hulst you will find a rich cultural history. With the fifteenth-century Basilica of St. Willibrordus as an eye-catcher. You drive back to Axel along the private nature reserve Groot Eiland.
