Description
The Canal through Zuid-Beveland was opened to shipping in 1866 and forms the direct connection between the Oosterschelde and the Western Scheldt in the shipping route from Antwerp to Rotterdam.
Until the mid-1970s, this was the busiest canal in Western Europe, with up to 100,000 ships per year.
With the arrival of the Scheldt-Rhine Canal, this number has fallen to the still respectable number of 44,000 ships per year.
At the start of WWII, a fierce battle took place around the canal between the German occupiers and the French troops stationed east of the canal.
This route shows the busy shipping traffic on the Western Scheldt, the vastness of the Oosterschelde and the tranquil villages around the canal.
