This route is one of the 42 stages of the Jacob van Lennep experience tour. A tour that was inspired by the tour that Van Lennep made in 1823 with his fellow student Van Hogendorp through the Netherlands. Click here for an overview of all stages. Prussia
On Thursday 17 July, Van Lennep and Van Hogendorp leave for Prussia. There is no carriage available, so Van Lennep arranges a manure cart including a tuber for Van Hogendorp and the luggage. He prefers to walk, also because"(...) the tuber was unaccustomed to trotting\\\". From a distance they see Bentheim Castle lying on a rock. Part of the castle now functions as a museum.
Count Van Hogendorp At the spa in Bad Bentheim, Van Lennep is told that there is no room. He answers that Count Van Hogendorp has a nasty injury to his foot. Suddenly, there are rooms available... It often happens that,
when something needs to be arranged , the young men appeal to their social status. They find that quite normal.
Gambling
The companions stay in Bad Bentheim until Monday 21 July. For Van Lennep, the spa seems like an oasis where the reins can be loosened for a while. His description sometimes reads like a nineteenth-century"On the road\\\". On the last evening, Van Lennep gambles away about a hundred guilders: a fifth of the total budget he had at his disposal for the trip! For Van Hogendorp, the stay in Bad Bentheim is hell. His foot heals, but the orthodox Protestant wants nothing to do with the people in the spa and their way of life .
