Leeuwarden, Nature Museum Fryslân and the Poptaslot

On this route you will encounter many sights, ideal if you fancy an extensive day out. Get off at recreation area De Groene Ster, the Sint Bonifatiuskerk, Natuurmuseum Fryslân and the stately Poptaslot!

Green Star
The route starts in Stiens. In the village you can admire the medieval St. Vitus Church, it is a picture! Via Gytsjerk you cycle to Hurdegarijp. Just before Leeuwarden you come through De Groene Ster, a recreation area with sunbathing areas, beaches and forest around the lake De Kleine Wielen.

St. Boniface Church
In Leeuwarden you will pass the Sint Bonifatiuskerk, built at the end of the nineteenth century to a design by the famous neo-Gothic architect Cuypers. This church is one of his most important works. Further on you can visit the Natuurmuseum Fryslân, with the skeleton of a gigantic blue whale. In Marssum you will pass another historical building: the stately Poptaslot, also called Azingastate or Heringastate. It was built in the fifteenth century for a lawyer from Leeuwarden.
