Description

Wageningen is a nice starting point for this beautiful route through the IJssel valley. Via Renkum and Wolfheze you make a beautiful turn to the Veluwe, where you discover a sheepfold.

Narrow Gauge Museum
You will soon take the ferry to the other side of the Rhine, where you can visit Steenbakkerij Randwijk GSS. Here you will find the Gelders Smalspoormuseum and a monumental brickworks, where bricks can still be baked the old-fashioned way with a coal-fired ring kiln.

Ede sheep flock
At Ede you cycle right past the sheepfold where the flock that grazes on the Edese and Ginkelse Heide stays. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, the number of Veluwe Heath sheep has decreased rapidly due to stricter laws and regulations, but this breed is now doing better. Further on you pass Heimerstein Castle: after the original castle was completely destroyed during the Battle of the Grebbeberg in 1940, it was rebuilt in 1946.
