Westerwolde: Groningen cycling gem

Westerwolde is a region in the east of the province of Groningen. Here you will find a beautiful landscape around the river Ruiten Aa. You also drive through the beautiful reclamation area at Stadskanaal.

Vledderbos
The route starts at the edge of the woods that surround the Ruiten Aa. You drive past the Beetser Koeln (Beetserkuilen): three sand extraction lakes that were created here in 1938 and now serve as a recreational area. Further on you drive through the late twentieth century Vledderbos. You cross the AG Wildervanckkanaal, after which you drive into the Pagedal: a nature reserve on the edge of Stadskanaal that consists of woods, meadows and a small lake.

Diamonds aa
You will pass through Wedde, where you can take a look at the fourteenth-century Huis te Wedde. After a while you enter the valley of the Ruiten Aa. Here you cycle through a variety of convex fields, hay meadows, bushes and wooded banks. In the spring the stream valley turns yellow because of the many marsh marigolds.
