Description

The Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the moraine landscape of the Gooi originated in the penultimate ice age (Saale ice age). That the land ice has also been on the ridge is evident from the large boulders that have been found there (for example the Amersfoort boulder) and from the flattened tops. At the end of the Ice Age, the meltwater flowed down the ridge in a westerly and southwesterly direction. The sand and gravel brought in by the meltwater settled at the foot of the ridge.
