Historic towns and vast polders

This tour through North Holland takes you through small old towns with a well-preserved history. In between you drive over winding dikes with wide views over fields and water.

Monnickendam
After a snack and drink at Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum you step on the saddle in a good mood. You can relax your legs on the Hoogedijk, while looking out over wide fields and the Gouwzee. In the distance you can see the islands of Marken. Monnickendam is the first historic town on your route. In the old town you stumble, so to speak, over the monumental buildings with characteristic facades.

Edam
In the polders you drive through surprisingly picturesque villages such as Zuiderwoude and Broek in Waterland. In Watergang you can get off at Visitor Center Ilperveld. Here you will learn more about this vast brackish peat meadow area with its countless ditches and reed beds. In Ilpendam you pass a house designed by Gerrit Rietveld from 1959. After the Purmerbos, the historic heart of Edam and the cozy harbor of Volendam await you.
