Description
Volendam is a great base for a day of cycling. There is plenty to do in this famous town, including the Palingsound Museum. You can enjoy the vast landscape in the area.
Markermeer
From Paviljoen Smit-Bokkum you first drive to the cozy and characteristic harbor of Volendam. Then you drive past the Fort at Edam, one of the forts from the Defense Line of Amsterdam. Cycling along the dike you look out over the vast and bird-rich Polder Zeevang, and you regularly see a beautiful old farm. Just before Warder you can walk onto the dike for a panoramic view of the Markermeer and of Warder itself.
Gouwzee
In Beets you pass the fifteenth-century village church with its strikingly low tower. Via Kwadijk you drive to Purmerend, after which you cycle a bit through the Purmerbos: an exception in this vast polder country. Katwoude is a beautiful town to cycle through at your leisure, you will see some beautiful buildings. From the dike you have a beautiful view over the Gouwzee. Get a breath of fresh air while you see the island of Marken on the horizon.
