Walking route Children's Transport Monument Hoek van Holland

From Hoek van Holland you will make a varied walk. You walk through a city park, through the dunes and along the sea. There is plenty to see and experience along the way.

Newlandsepark
You walk a bit along the harbor and the Nieuwe Waterweg. You see many ships here. You also pass the Kustverlichtingsmuseum that is located in the old lighthouse. Further on you walk through the wooded Nieuwlandsepark, a beautiful piece of urban nature.

Atlantic Wall
Further on, the landscape slowly changes into dunes with scrub. And suddenly you are on the beach. Enjoy the sound of the surf, while you walk along the water. On warm days, cooling is not far away: put your bare feet in the refreshing North Sea. Now that is relaxing. Over the pier you walk along the Nieuwe Waterweg. You pass the Atlantikwall Museum here, which is more than worth a visit.

Children's Transport Monument
After Kristallnacht in November 1938, many Jewish children were bullied and transported. The English negotiated with the Nazis to allow more than 10,000 Jewish children to come to England as refugees. These so-called Kindertransports took place from various locations. The first from Berlin, later followed by transports from Vienna, Prague and Gdansk. The children were transported by train to Hoek van Holland, after which they sailed by boat to Harwich. Visual artist Frank Meisler experienced one of these transports as a child. As a memento, he created several works of art, one of which is in Hoek van Holland.
