Description
Deeply hidden in nature, they suddenly appear before you: the impressive forts of the New Dutch Waterline. You can discover this quintessential Dutch piece of history with the new Waterworks Route. This is a cycling route above and below the Lek that can be downloaded via the Abellife App. Three variants have been created for Culemborg, Vianen and Nieuwegein with various boarding points and nice terrace options on the forts. You can cross the Lek with the Liniepont.

The concept for a defense line in which the low-lying polder landscape is flooded dates back to 1589. With the fortresses in the fortified towns of Muiden, Weesp, Naarden, Gorinchem and Woudrichem, the line was guarded from the higher ground.
