Description
From Appelscha you visit two sights. You pass through the Fochteloërveen, a unique nature reserve. You can also visit the Prison Museum, a fun experience.
Fochteloërveen
First you drive to the Fochteloërveen: a nature reserve consisting of forest, heath, fens and raised bogs. The fact that this area has retained its old character is mainly due to chance: the nature reserve is relatively isolated on the border of Drenthe and Friesland. You will experience a wonderfully refreshing silence here.
Prison Museum
In Westervelde you pass the Tonckensborg. This mansion from 1630 has been inhabited by the Tonckens family since 1742. You will also see some beautiful monumental farms here, what a special atmosphere! After a while you drive into Veenhuizen, a Drenthe village that was only accessible to prison employees until 1981. You can visit the Prison Museum here. You drive back to Appelscha via Fochteloo.
