Enjoy the tranquility of the Dwingelderveld

The Dwingelderveld is one of the quiet areas in the Netherlands. In the vicinity of this nature reserve it is wonderful to cycle through the authentic Drenthe countryside.

From the starting point you drive into the beautiful Drenthe countryside. Soon you enter the Dwingelderveld National Park: one of the most beautiful parts of Drenthe. You cycle through pine forests and past peat bogs and juniper bushes. A gem is the vast wet heathland with its almost endless, undisturbed horizon. The Dwingelderveld is one of the quieter places in our country. Except if you suddenly find yourself between a herd of Drentse Heideschapen grazing the heath.

Saxon farms
You then drive through a succession of forest, stream valleys, meadows and fields. You will pass through Eemster and Leggeloo, two villages where you will see some beautiful characteristic farms. Finally, you pass through the village of Dwingeloo. Here you pass Westrup Castle, a former eighteenth-century manor house. On the leafy Brink you can see the Sint-Nicolaaskerk, which dates from the fifteenth century. Take a look at the striking spire: it has an onion shape!
