Description

In the Mastbos (Kalmthoutse Steenweg) a beautiful Nordic walking path of 4.5 km starts at node 15.
The spacious parking is on the opposite side of the street (left if you come from Kalmthout). There is also the start of a special, with information panels
walking path :" The trench path" from the First World War

The green splendor of the Mastenbos is home to this unsuspected heritage treasure: a very complete German trench line from 1917 with numerous bunkers.
This World War I line was fully mapped using 53 aerial photos taken by German Lieutenant Josef Zimmermann in January 1918. These photos were only discovered in 2007!

This resulted in 476 military relics preserved above ground and 10 km of trenches throughout the region. The Mastenbos alone is good for about 70 bunkers and 4.8 km in total of trenches. Or: more trenches than in the entire Westhoek combined. This is not only unique in Belgium, but even in Europe.
