Walking route through the outskirts of Bourtange

At Hotel Bourtange you can enjoy a coffee or a delicious lunch on the cozy garden terrace. Then you walk your legs loose on a leafy path. Between the trees you see old farms and wide grasslands. In the hamlet of Weite you walk up the dirt path along the Ruiten Aa canal. It is wonderfully quiet to walk along the banks. Ideal for walking away from your daily routine. Here you pass the Bourtangersluis from 1917.

Then you walk along the Bourtanger Canal. To the left of the path you walk for a while along the edge of the forest. What a beautiful setting! There is also a Hoogholtje on the water, the Groningen name for a high fixed foot bridge. Just outside the Bourtange fortress you walk past some characteristic houses. At the beginning of De Rille you pass the remains of a former redoubt between the trees on the right. You walk back to Hotel Bourtange through the vast border area with Germany.
