Description

The large, quiet heath where you can still find the Drenthe of a hundred years ago. That is what makes a walk across the Ballooërveld so special. In August the heather is in full bloom. Walk over the Galgenberg and discover the view of the ancient cart tracks in the flowering heathland.

Highlights
  • The sheepfold is the home of the herd of Drenthe heath sheep that graze the field.
  • The anti-tank ditch from the Second World War cuts zigzagging through the heathland.
  • The pingo ruin originated from an ice hill from the Ice Age.
  • On top of the Galgenberg you look out over the former ruts of the medieval travelers.
Dogs are welcome, provided they are kept on a lead. The route is not suitable for disabled people and mainly runs on sandy paths.
