Walking through Vessem and the Buikheide

From Mout & Hout you walk past the village square of Vessem. You will see some beautiful buildings here, further along is the St. Lambertus Church. The current building dates from 1882, but the history of this church goes back to the Middle Ages. Then you walk into the Buikheide, a forest area that was once created for logging. You will see conifers and American oaks here. In the middle of the forest you pass the Grootmeer and Kleinmeer, two fens that were created by sand drift. You can make a pit stop at Grandcafé-Restaurant de Gouden Leeuw before you walk the second loop through the Kleine Beerze Valley. What a beautiful landscape! And so wonderfully quiet. In Vessem you can still see some old farms and the Jacobus mill. Time for a terrace at your starting point!
