This cycling route starts in the village of Giethoorn, with its charming arched bridges and thatched farms. You drive through Wieden-Weerribben National Park, one of the most special wetlands in Europe.
This cycling route from Giethoorn leads straight through the Wieden-Weerribben National Park. This swamp area was created by peat extraction around the 13th century. The remaining land (the legakkers) fell prey to floods. This is how the lakes were created, which you will encounter plenty of along the way. Puddles created by peat extraction are called 'weeding' here. The best known are the Beulaker, Belter and Bovenwijde. In addition to Giethoorn, you also drive past Belt-Schutsloot, a picturesque water village. The local population lived there for years from peat extraction. But when the peat ran out, the population switched to reed cultivation.
