Description

The Kampina is located in Brabant, between Boxtel and Oisterwijk. The Romans called this area Campinia after the word Kempen, which meant wasteland. The heath is the result of deforestation and turf farming in later times. In the early nineteenth century, coniferous forest was planted on a large scale to retain the sand. Without human intervention, the resulting cultural landscape would again transform into wasteland. Natuurmonumenten now manages the area in such a way that various biotopes with a rich biodiversity continue to exist. In the northern part of the Kampina are the moors and fens. From B&B De Kempse Hoeve you can walk straight into the Kampina. For more background information and photos, see my website
