Train cycling Nijverdal-Wierden: past sheepfold and burial mound

Discover Nijverdal
The starting point of this route is Nijverdal station . This city used to be a factory workers' village and agriculture was practiced there. After possible names such as Nijverheidsstede, Nijverheidsoord and Nijverzorg had been reviewed, the name Nijverdal was chosen in 1836. After Nijverdal you cycle north to Hellendoorn, and when you have crossed the water, the route continues south-east, towards Hulsen.

Places of interest along the way
After cycling through the centre of Hulsen, you will pass the Schaapskooi in Wierden. A beautiful old Dutch landscape feature where sheep used to stay in times gone by. There are also burial mounds between Hoge Hexel and Wierden where this route passes. Twente was already inhabited at this location very early on. For example, burial mounds from the Iron Age and burial mounds from the Neolithic period have been found. The then inhabitants of this area used a burial mound to bury their loved ones.

Discover nature
Between Wierden and Nijverdal lies a nature reserve of 420 hectares, where a herd of 300 Veluwe heath sheep regularly feast on fresh twigs and branches. Rare birds forage for food between the bushes and seek the peace, space and shelter of the vast landscape.
