In the center of Druten you can park your car on the market behind the church. Follow the signage to the pedestrian ferry, the Veerdam (no. 13).
You cycle on the dikes of both the Waal and the Maas. The Waal, characteristic with its busy shipping and large floodplains and nowadays equipped with secondary channels. The Meuse, which has a more romantic appearance and is equipped with locks to maintain the water level. There are several (foot) springs on the Maas. You can also take a trip to the historic town of Ravenstein via the ferry foot in the summer months.
Bergharen is a small village in the middle of the Land van Maas en Waal. The village has the largest continuous river sand dune area in Western Europe (Wikipedia) largely covered with forest. Near the belt mill De Verrekijker is a chapel containing an image of Our Lady of God in Distress. It is an official pilgrimage site.
Appeltern: On the east side of Appeltern (on the route) is the steam pumping station De Tuut, which can be visited. The Tuut has been replaced by the adjacent Bloemers electric pumping station, which now drains the Nieuwe Wetering and thus the southeasternmost part from the Land van Maas en Waal to the Nijmegen districts of Lindenholt and Dukenborg and keeps part of Heumen dry. During the steam days of the Tuut, when the historic pumping station is in operation, the engine museum can also be visited. View the steam days on the website: www.de-tuut.nl
Only outbuildings of Appeltern Castle remain. The most famous resident was the patriot Joan van der Capellen tot den Pol, brought to life in the novel Shadow image or the secret of Appeltern (1989) by the writer Hella Haasse.
