The rich history of Leeuwarden

Leeuwarden has a rich history. For example, there are more than 600 national monuments in this beautiful city! So time to explore this Frisian gem on foot.

Oranjestad
You will see many old buildings here, some dating from the early seventeenth century. You walk across the cozy Gouverneursplein, further on you will see the Stadhouderlijk Hof at Hofplein: this white building is a former city palace of the royal family. Leeuwarden is also an Oranjestad!

Waag
You also walk through Nieuwestad, a neighborhood that dates from the fifteenth century. Here you can see, among other things, the beautiful medieval Waag. Then you walk through the Nieuwe Kanaal area, one of the protected cityscapes in Leeuwarden. After you have walked through the green surroundings of Sportpark Kalverdijkje, you also walk through the Dokter Zamenhofpark. At't Andere Museum you can admire a collection of old cars, among other things, before walking back into the picturesque city center.
