IJsselvallei Route

Between Deventer and the ruins of Nijenbeek Castle, the IJssel meanders through an open landscape of levees and old river arms. Further west there is a wet landscape, intersected by slightly higher and drier cover sand ridges. There used to be a vast swamp forest here. Nuisance caused by high water from the IJssel and seepage water from the moraine of the Veluwe determined life in the IJssel valley for centuries. The winding Veluwe dike with its many gullies bears witness to this.
