The Gelderland River Area

This route takes you through part of the Gelderland River area. You drive a circuit that takes you along the Waal and through nice villages such as Beuningen and Bergharen.

Afferden
You cycle to Afferden, a picturesque village. Here you pass, among other things, the ruins of the fourteenth-century church tower. The church itself was demolished in 1838. Further on you pass the Drie Wuiven, a flour mill from 1869. From the winding dike you have a beautiful view of the Afferdense and Deestse Waarden, a nature reserve rich in water and birds. On the edge of Ewijk you pass the fourteenth-century Doddendael Castle.

Church tower
In Ewijk itself you cycle past the Oude Toren, among other things. This church tower originally dates from the twelfth century. The accompanying church was demolished in 1918. A little further on is the neo-Romanesque St. John the Baptist Church from 1917. Just past Wezel, it is beautiful to cycle through a series of forests, meadows and old farms. Batenburg enjoys a protected cityscape, here you can see, among other things, the ruins of a medieval castle.
