Description

From Eethuis Ster in de Kersentuin you can take a nice bike ride through the polders around Schalkwijk. You pass some former fortifications and discover the picturesque Schalkwijk. Cycling along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal you quickly get into your rhythm, while looking out at the passing boats. In the polders you drive through wide grasslands. It is wonderfully quiet here. You can also see the Verdronken Bos, a former forest that has been converted into a water storage area. From the Lekdijk you have a beautiful view over the river and the flowery floodplains. You regularly pass an ancient farmhouse. Further on you pass the moated Fort Honswijk from 1844, part of the New Dutch Waterline. A little later you will see Werk aan de Groeneweg between the fruit trees, a position with earthen walls and casemates.
