Enjoy cycling through hospitable Salland, a region between the river landscape of the IJssel and the hills of the De Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. The image on this route is determined by historic villages, estates and farms. Beautiful country houses and castles give this tour a chic accent.
From granary to country house
The start and end point of this cycle route is the cozy Heino campsite. Start the day with a cup of coffee or, after a long day of cycling, sit down in the campsite's restaurant for a snack and a drink. Just outside the center of the village of Heino you can already see the first estate't Rozendael sparkling through the trees. Initially there was a so-called spieker at this location, intended for the storage of grain. In the past, feudal lords had to pay rent and taxes to their lord. They mainly did this in kind with products from the land such as rye and oats, which were then stored in a spiker. These payments in kind were replaced in the course of the 17th century by payment in money and with that the function of the spieker disappeared. Many lords then started using their estate as a country house to stay when they wanted to escape the city for a while.
Salland has many regional products. The farmers from this region prepare all kinds of delicacies at home: fresh asparagus, milk, cheese, wine, beer and ice cream. You will pass several farm shops along the route. If you still have room in your panniers, take a look around the shops and be surprised by all the tasty home-grown products. In the summer months, the Sallandse Bottermarkt is held on Wednesday mornings in the center of Raalte. At this folkloric market you can admire old farmer's crafts and authentic costumes from this region. You can also eat Kruudmoes or oliebollen. In Raalte you will also find a pleasant shopping center where you can go on days when there is no market.
