A detour through the Weerribben

Want to get some fresh air in a beautiful nature reserve? This walk takes you from Kalenberg through the Weerribben.

Kalenberg reed
The route starts at Hotel Café Restaurant Het Rietershuijs. You walk through Kalenberg, the village known for its reed cultivation. Kalenberg reed is still a popular building material for covering roofs. The footpath then leads you through the reed lands, rugged grasslands and along the waters and swamp forests that the Weerribben is known for. Here you will experience that the Weerribben is not only one of the most beautiful, but also the quietest nature reserves in the Netherlands.

Painter's cottage
On the Hoogeweg you can still see a few nineteenth-century monumental farm workers' houses. There is also a former painter's house. You pass two small polder windmills. The first thing you see is the Wicher, a spider mill from 1982. Further on is the Tjasker Kalenberg from 1963. You walk back to Kalenberg along the Heuvengracht and Kalenbergergracht. Until the 1950s, Kalenberg was a real sailing village: it was only accessible by water.
