A detour through the Weerribben

Want to get some fresh air in a beautiful nature reserve? This walk takes you from Kalenberg through the Weerribben.

Kalenberger reed
The route starts at Hotel Café Restaurant Het Rietershuijs. You walk through Kalenberg, the village known for its reed cultivation. Kalenberger reed is still a popular building material for covering roofs. The footpath then leads you through the reed lands, rough grasslands and along the waters and swamp forests for which the Weerribben is known. Here you will experience that the Weerribben is not only one of the most beautiful, but also the quietest nature reserves in the Netherlands.

Peat cutter's house
On the Hoogeweg you can still see a few nineteenth-century monumental farm workers' houses. There is also a former peat cutter's house. You pass two small polder mills. First you see the Wicher, a spider mill from 1982. Further on is the Tjasker Kalenberg from 1963. Along the Heuvengracht and the Kalenbergergracht you walk back to Kalenberg. Until the fifties of the previous century, Kalenberg was a real sailing village: it was only accessible by water.
