Walking through the Weerribben

From Hotel Café Restaurant Het Rietershuijs you leave Kalenberg via the Kalenbergergracht. This waterway formed the traffic artery of the Weerribben for centuries. Until the fifties of the last century, Kalenberg was even only accessible via this canal. The path leads you further along the Heer van Diezenvaart, another traffic artery. No matter how unspoilt the Weerribben look, the landscape has been shaped in part by hard-working peat cutters. Just outside the hamlet of Nederland you walk through the reed lands, rough grasslands and along the waters and swamp forests for which the Weerribben is known. This is not only one of the most beautiful, but also one of the quietest nature reserves in the Netherlands. Along the Wetering and Heuvengracht you walk back to Kalenberg. Time for a terrace at your starting point!
