Walking along canals through the Weerribben

You really should explore the Weerribben on foot at least once. Walking allows you to optimally enjoy the varied natural beauty and the silence.

Kalenbergergracht
At Hotel Café Restaurant Het Rietershuijs you can first eat something, so that you start your journey with sufficient energy. You walk along the Kalenbergergracht, the wide waterway that was the traffic artery of the Weerribben for centuries. If you hear anything, it is the wind rustling through the reeds or a reed warbler. No matter how rough and natural the Weerribben look, almost every square meter here was once excavated by hard-working peat diggers.

Weerribben Visitor Centre
On the edge of Ossenzijl you will pass the Weerribben Visitors Centre, where you will learn more about this beautiful nature reserve. Then you will walk a few kilometres along the Steenwijk-Ossenzijl Canal. It is nice to walk here, while you look out at the boats that sail by. On the Hoogeweg you will see a few monumental farm workers' houses and a former peat cutter's house. You will also pass the Tjasker Kalenberg, a polder mill from 1963.
