Walking along canals through the Weerribben

At Hotel Café Restaurant Het Rietershuijs you start your walk. You first walk along the wide waterway of the Kalenbergergracht. If you hear anything, it is the wind rustling through the reeds or a reed warbler. No matter how rough and natural the Weerribben look, almost every square meter here was once dug up by hard-working peat cutters. On the edge of Ossenzijl you pass the Weerribben Visitor Center, where you can learn more about this beautiful nature reserve. Then you walk a few kilometers along the Steenwijk-Ossenzijl Canal. It is nice to walk here, while you look out at the boats sailing by. On the Hoogeweg you can see a few monumental farm workers' houses and a former peat cutter's house. You also pass the Tjasker Kalenberg, a polder mill from 1963.
