From the Weerribben to the Tjeukemeer

From Hotel Café Restaurant Het Rietershuijs you drive along the Kalenbergergracht through the Weerribben. What is immediately striking: the silence in the middle of this national park! From Ossenzijl you drive through Weststellingwerf, a region in Friesland. Here you cycle on car-free roads through a characteristic polder country of vast grasslands, beautiful old farms and countless ditches. You pass the river Kuunder (Tjonger in Frisian), which forms the language border between Stellingwerfs and Frisian. From the banks you will soon have a beautiful view of the Tjeukemeer, the largest inland lake in Friesland. You will see many pleasure yachts or skûtsjes passing by here. Further on you pass the Rottige Meente, a nature reserve of water, reeds and flowering grasslands. In the picturesque Oldemarkt you can admire the medieval Reformed Church.
