Cycling around the Bergumermeer and the Leijen

This route takes you around two Frisian lakes: Bergumermeer and De Leijen. You can enjoy the peace and natural beauty here. You will find plenty of cultural history in the surrounding villages.

Frisian Woods
A setting of forests, hedgerows, grasslands, winding streams and cross-country farms. The beauty of this region is known to few, so it is wonderfully quiet here to cycle on car-free roads. Ideal to leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind for a day.

Bell chair
On the edge of Bergum you will pass the Kruiskerk, which originally dates from the thirteenth century. Further on you will see some beautiful nineteenth-century villas in the center of the village. In neighboring Sumar, a teacher invented the Bintje potato variety in 1905 by crossing two other varieties. At junction 94 you have a beautiful view over the rugged banks of Lake De Leijen. In the hamlet of Buweklooster you will see another characteristic Frisian sight: a bell chair.
