The charm of the Frisian Woods

The Friese Wouden is a relatively unknown region in the northeast of Friesland. You can cycle here again through an idyllic landscape. Get on your bike and come experience it for yourself.

Frisian stints
In this region you drive through a small-scale bocage landscape of woods, hedgerows, grasslands and winding streams. You won't find terps here, but you will find characteristic side farms and monumental buildings. Like Fogelsangh State, a 1646 stins you can visit. The beautiful surroundings of these stins are a nationally protected sight. In Westergeest you can admire, among other things, the medieval Reformed Church.

Lauwersmeer
At the Dokkumergrootdiep you will see two locks. The Willem Loré lock was constructed in 1969 at the closure of the Lauwerszee. This lock is named after the man who built the nearby Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen lock in 1729. From the Kwelderweg you can look out over the rugged landscape of National Park Lauwersmeer. Further on you drive through Visvliet, a picturesque Groningen village. Here you can see the beautiful medieval village church and the thatched Hilmahuistermolen from 1868.
