The charm of the Frisian Forests

The Friese Wouden is a relatively unknown region in the northeast of Friesland. Here you can cycle quietly through an idyllic landscape. Get on your bike and experience it for yourself.

Frisian stins
In this region you drive through a small-scale landscape of forests, hedgerows, grasslands and winding streams. You will not find mounds here, but you will find characteristic cross-house farms and monumental buildings. Such as Fogelsangh State, a stins from 1646 that you can visit. The beautiful surroundings of these stins are a nationally protected sight. In Westergeest you can admire the medieval Reformed Church.

Lauwersmeer
At the Dokkumergrootdiep you will see two locks. The Willem Lorésluis was constructed in 1969 at the closure of the Lauwerszee. This lock is named after the man who had the nearby Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen lock constructed in 1729. From the Kwelderweg you can look out over the rugged landscape of Lauwersmeer National Park. Further on you drive through Visvliet, a picturesque Groningen village. Here you will see the beautiful medieval village church and the thatched Hilmahuister mill from 1868.
