Cycling along the Frisian Zeedijk

This route takes you along both sides of the Frisian Zeedijk. In the polders within the dike you drive through some characteristic villages where you can admire beautiful old churches.

Outside the dike The route starts at Hoeve Noordveld, a special place to stay. You cycle through Oude Bildtzijl, which still exudes the atmosphere of times gone by. Here you will see, among other things, the striking Juliana Church from 1806. Then you drive many kilometers along both sides of the Zeedijk. On the right, the Frisian land of extensive grasslands and ditches is protected. On the left are alluvial polders outside the dike. It is wonderful to get a breath of fresh air here while enjoying the vastness.

Picturesque Ferwerd Just before the charming terp village of Wierum you can climb the dike to view the Wadden Sea. The Maria Church from 1200 is located on the mound. There is also a beautiful medieval church in neighboring Nes. In the polders you drive on roads with little car traffic. Ideal for a leisurely chat and admiring old farms. Ferwerd is a somewhat larger village on your route, it enjoys a protected village view because of its beautiful old buildings.
