Walking through Franeker and surroundings

The route gets off to a great start. At Hotel Poort van Franeker, you can enjoy a drink and a snack in a beautiful setting before setting off. Your first stop is Franeker's historic center. You'll easily soak up the historic atmosphere. You'll pass the 16th-century Klaarkampster Orphanage and the 15th-century Martini Church, among other sights. The Martena House is a stins dating back to 1498, and houses the city museum.
You'll also pass the town hall, dating back to 1594. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium is world-famous. It's the oldest working planetarium in the world. From the city walls, you can look out over the Sjûkelân, Franeker's handball field. In the countryside, you'll stroll past expansive meadows and ditches. It's wonderfully quiet here! In Hitzum, you'll pass the village church, dating back to 1883.
