Walking through Franeker and surroundings

Franeker is one of the Frisian eleven cities. And what kind: in this town you will find a special and rich cultural history. In the countryside it is nice to walk through the polders.

Martina Museum
The route immediately starts well. At Hotel Poort van Franeker you can enjoy a drink and snack in a beautiful location before you set off. You are the first to walk into the old center of Franeker. You will have no trouble enjoying the historic atmosphere here. You will pass the sixteenth-century Klaarkampster Orphanage and the fifteenth-century Martinikerk, among others. The Martena house is a stins from 1498, where the city museum is located.

Eise Eisinga
You will also pass the town hall from 1594. The Eise Eisinga Planetarium is world famous. This is the oldest operating planetarium in the world. Eisinga built it between 1774 and 1781 in his bell gable house. From the city wall you have a view of the Sjûkelân, the handball field of Franeker. In the countryside you walk along wide grasslands and ditches. How wonderfully quiet it is here! In Hitzum you pass the village church from 1883.
