The Biesbosch and Kinderdijk Mills

Just above Alblasserdam you cycle past a unique and world-famous Dutch icon: the Kinderdijkse Molens. A little later you drive through National Park de Biesbosch: another beautiful Dutch gem.

Alblasserdam
The route starts at Het Wapen van Alblasserdam, a cozy location at the marina of Alblasserdam. You drive along the river Noord to the village of Kinderdijk. A little further on are the Kinderdijkse Molens: nineteen polder mills that form two mill corridors. They were built in the eighteenth century to improve the drainage of the Alblasserwaard. Since 1997, the windmills have been on the Unesco World Heritage List. Also further on you will see some old mills on the river Alblas.

Alblasserbos
You pass through the Alblasserbos, a beautiful nature reserve in the Alblasserwaard. Cycling on the dike along the Beneden Merwede you can enjoy views of the rippling water, the floodplains and monumental old buildings. You cross the river with a ferry and cycle through the unspoilt nature of the Brabantse Biesbosch. What a silence! You drive back to Het Wapen van Alblasserdam along the banks of the Wantij and again the Noord.
