Description
Already on the riverbed of the Schwalm you notice whether you are on the Dutch or German side: in Germany the river has been canalized since 1904. In the Netherlands it remained more or less untouched.
It was the same with the forests: on the German side of the border a forestry area, on the Dutch side the area often still has the character of a primeval forest. For hikers, the path along the border has long been an insider tip. It leads on winding roads past moist meadows and ponds for the protection of all kinds of plant and animal species: through the juniper heath, through the northern part of the Schwalmbruch to the open waters of the Elmpter Bruch.
The wonderful development of the animal and plant world through the restoration of an old arm of the Swalm to its original state is wonderful to see.
