Tour of Stellingwerf

The Stellingwerf is a special region in the east of Friesland. You will find beautiful nature and an authentic cultural history.

Clock chair The beautiful Trefkerk from 1903 is the first point of interest on your route. In the bell tower hangs a clock from 1435! Further on you will pass the Visitor Center Drents-Friese Wold, a nice stop. You drive through the woods to Elsloo. In this ribbon village you will see a beautiful church with a belfry and characteristic farms. As you drive further through the rural area, you notice how wonderfully quiet it is here.

Aekingerzand From junction 22 you drive along the natural banks of the Tjonger, called Kuunder in Lower Saxony. The river is part of the border of Stellingwerf. Oldeberkoop enjoys a protected village view, including the beautiful Boniface Church from the twelfth century. What a nice atmosphere you will find here! Finally, you drive through the Drents-Friese Wold. From the watchtower on the Aekingerzand you have a beautiful panorama!

Drents Friesland The Stellingwerf may be located in the southeast of Friesland, but you sometimes have the feeling that you are driving through Drenthe. That is not surprising: as early as the fourteenth century, the then poor Drenthe villages joined the more prosperous Friesland. However, they retained their Saxon character, which is reflected in the greens and ash trees, among other things. And in the language: the population continued to speak Low Saxon, even though most young people no longer speak this dialect. The language border is formed by the river with the Frisian name Tjonger, in Low Saxon it is called Kuunder.
